Due to the ethnic nature of many of the stores in our neighborhood, we grilled with bamboo charcoal. (the man selling it said I could also use it in my bathroom and near my shoes to keep them smelling not so bad....)
Veggies!
The first bit of work in the garden was clearing out all the old garden leftovers and weeds and snails and cat-turds. We found a few beets which we ate and many carrots but they were only the size of a fingernail. Planting will begin soon. Even though it's towards the late end of the summer, we can still plant some beans and roots.
We are lucky to have an enormous fig tree in our back yard. They are so much more beautiful fresh than in a newton. They are milder than they appear but perfect with some honey. We probably have a thousand dangling from the heights.
The birds love the figs too! But they are kind enough to eat the ones at the very top out of our reach. Here's a Silvereye in our tree having his dinner:

I went to a talk on saturday by NZ Gardener. It was called Booze from the garden. cucmber cordiel, courgette rum, cider, elderberry wine. It was very entertaining and inspiring. Just neeed a blender and cheese cloth and glass jars, and a bucket.
