Happy Thanksgiving 2009!

Last week Camille and I flew down to Christchurch for an early Thanksgiving. .. mmm

We were treated to a fantastic feast at the hands of my parents and siblings - including a Turkey stuffed with a chicken. Camille made a wonderful cranberry sauce and apple rhubarb pie. Naomi made a yummy seasonal strawberry salad. My mother's family tradition survived the continental and seasonal shift of the holiday - in the form of a rowdy game of Pit.

In keeping with the harvest theme of Thanksgiving, the following day we helped extract the honey from my father's hive.

With an electrically heated knife, cutting away the wax caps to access the honey:

Spinning the honey out of the comb in a centrifugal barrel.

Waxy honey from draining from the bottom of the barrel:

We then microwaved this liquid in small batches to separate the wax from the honey, then strained the honey again. All in all over 40 jars of delicious thanksgiving honey!
