West Coast Camping

Camille and I just got back from a 24 hour camping trip in the Waitakere Ranges - an amazing regional park only a thirty minutes drive away. We camped at Karekare Beach, where we camped a few years ago on Camille's very first night in New Zealand ever.

We hiked along some clifftops: (if you look closely I'm the white dot leaning on the fence)

Enjoyed a Cabbage Tree with a view:

Watched the sun set....

...as we played glow-in-the-dark frisbee on the beach: (thanks Cliff n Pam!)

The next day I swam under a waterfall:

And Camille explored the inside of an ancient burned out Kauri tree:

And we watched the World Junior Surfing Championships at Piha from these rocks:
So we were inspired to try bodyboarding later in the afternoon, but it was mostly in vain; five foot waves on the most dangerous beach in New Zealand was no walk in the park. Piha Beach is so infamous it has its own reality tv show 'Piha Rescue'.

Until next time,

-Carl (and Camille)

You guys have the best life! It is like a postcard. Did you ever read "room with a view"? it is an old novel about young 20's visiting Italy on a grand tour. I loved that book. I loved that these people leisurely moved through scenery, art and beauty. and they felt it. Are you doing the same thing? only it is NZ scenery, music and love and beauty.
ciao,
Mom

The "old" bk referred to by wells is by E.M.Forster The movie made of it happens to be my favorite movie of all time. It was there that I heard for the first time that wrenching aria "oh mio babbio caro". All you who love Florence: read this bk, see this movie.
